By Andrea McClure

You may be a bride, or simply a guest and you are thinking about what to give for such a special occasion. As a bride you have to give favors to thank your guests for attending. As a guest you have to give the bride something as part of the wedding shower. For a lot of people this is their first time doing this and it can be a bit confusing at times without help. So I will strive to give aid to both the bride and the wedding guest about choosing great gifts and accessories and here are 5 innovative suggestions to help you out.

For the bride, start with your theme. Half the battle for deciding wedding gifts and accessories lies in deciding a theme for your wedding. Pick something close to your heart. It can be a job you love, a place you visited, or something reflecting your personal history or heritage. This done the choosing of gifts become easy as your theme will guide your choices. You will be nudged in the right direction as what is tasteful and what is bad. The main rule of thumb is that if the theme can't be realized properly in a wedding favor it's probably not the one to choose. Going by the suggestion you can never go wrong.

For the guest use what you know. Choosing gifts for the bride and groom is quite simple when you think about it. You first have to think about the couple. Are you close to them? Do you share mutual friends? Use these connections to help inform and guide your decision of a gift. The other thing to keep in mind is the traditional gifts given at wedding. For example you know that gifts that will be useful in the newlyweds' home are a traditional type of gift.

For the Bride, think of useful items that your guest might need in everyday life. I had a relative go to a wedding recently so I asked her what was done at the wedding. She received a water bottle promoting water conservation. Since she is a gardener at a university it was something she could use on the job and it was a hit with other coworkers who were also at the wedding.

Also another suggestion for the bride when choosing accessories is no use them in the most obvious way. Try new perspectives of old tried and true gifts. Look for new interpretations whenever possible. Try applying a gift in a different way than normal. Another good idea is to look for ways to make the accessories your own customize when appropriate and look for inspiration around you. The surprising thing is as common as human experience is no two people's lives and passions are exactly alike. Using this as your guiding philosophy you will find a design style or dcor that is uniquely your own.

Overall use your imagination. Yes there are the established gifts and traditional ways of thinking about how to choose them. But don't' be afraid to break the mold or try something new. The key is that in the end you give gifts that reflect how well you know your target recipient. The more in line with this the gift is the more likely it will be a success.
